PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (PCE) LEVEL 5 (LEADING TO QTLS)

Structure and Attendance
This is a two-year, part-time course on one afternoon per week for two years.

• Developing Professional Practice in a Subject Specialism
• Teaching, learning and assessing
• Managing and Supporting Learner Behaviour and Inclusion (including SEND and SEMH)
• Pedagogical Approaches in Education: Learning Theories
• Developing Wider Professional Practice
• Curriculum Design in a Subject Specialist Area
• Pedagogical Approaches in Education: Digital Literacies
• Practice Based Action Research in a Subject Specialism

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of written assignments for each module and will be observed in their teaching practice on four occasions in year one and four occasions in year two.

To provide an initial teaching qualification for those working (in-service) within the Further Education and Skills Sector (FE & SS) and a route into becoming a professional practitioner with the opportunity to progress on to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

The programme follows a work-based model and as a consequence links theory and practice in each module and develops each trainee teacher’s ability to improve and develop their knowledge, critical understanding of well-established principles and the way those principles have developed, along with the skills of current pedagogical approaches in their own area of specialism.

In addition, trainee teachers are required to critically reflect on their own personal and professional values, skills, and knowledge in line with the Department for Education Core Content Framework for  Initial Teacher Education and the Professional Standards devised by the Education and Training Foundation (ETF).

The structure of our programmes follows educational aims that are tailored to each programme. These are all outlined in the Programme Specification documents found under our Quality Assurance page, including further details such as the learning outcomes.

The qualification provides a route to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. Upon successful completion, individuals can gain QTLS via a process of professional formation via the Society for Education and Training (SET).

You will be provided support and guidance throughout the programme by your university tutor, a subject specialist mentor and a pastoral mentor.

Placement

Candidates will need to be teaching in a college of Further Education and Skills setting (prison, sixth form, adult education centre, healthcare or community organisation, the public services etc).

Over the two year programme, you will need to evidence a minimum of 150 hours teaching placement (100 hours of which needs to be in a subject specific area; 20 hours need to be online (synchronous) and 80 hours face-to-face). A second placement (20 hours) in a different context or department is also a requirement, although this does not need to be a teaching role.

100 hours of additional responsibilities (such as attending team meetings, interview, assessment meetings, peer observations etc) over the two years, also needs to be evidenced.

A specialist mentor will support you in your workplace along with a mentor who will undertake pastoral duties.

Academic Entry Qualifcations Overview

• A Level 3 in the Subject Specialism (PCE)
• A Level 2 in English and Maths. (We'll consider candidates with pending GCSEs).

We'll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or Maths.
