Advance your career in education with a foundation degree that equips you with professional skills, practical expertise, and nationally recognised credentials, all while supporting your work-life balance and opening doors to further study and teacher training.
The LEARNING SUPPORT FDA FOUNDATION DEGREE is tailored for teaching assistants and learning support professionals seeking to deepen their impact in the classroom. Awarded by the University of Surrey and aligned with National Occupational Standards, the programme is delivered part-time over one evening per week, making it accessible for those balancing employment and personal commitments.
Learners benefit from a curriculum designed to provide immediate, practical skills relevant to supporting teaching and learning in schools, colleges, and educational organisations. Modules span reflective and professional practice, planning and assessment, equality and inclusion, supporting English and mathematics, technology for teaching, special educational needs, and action research. The close-knit learning environment fosters collaboration and peer support, enhancing both confidence and competence.
Graduates achieve professional recognition in their current roles and gain a clear progression route to a top-up degree and teacher training, including Initial Teacher Training pathways such as Schools Direct, SCITT, or PGCE. The course is ideal for those with a Level 3 qualification, at least one year’s experience, and a current placement, offering a supportive and rewarding journey towards educational leadership.
For all those involved in a teaching and learning support role and who have achieved a full NVQ Level 3 for Teaching Assistants or an equivalent qualification, have one year's experience in a school as a Learning Support Assistant, and have a current placement of a minimum of 15 hours per week in a supporting role.
